What is cauliflower ear?

Cauliflower ear is a permanent deformity of the outer ear caused by repeated trauma or friction. It develops when a blow to the ear causes blood to pool between the skin and cartilage, forming what doctors call an auricular haematoma.

If the blood is not drained quickly, the cartilage can lose its blood supply and begin to die. As the ear heals, scar tissue forms, creating the rough, swollen appearance that resembles a cauliflower.

Why do rugby players get cauliflower ear?

Rugby players frequently experience heavy contact during scrums, rucks, mauls and tackles. These repeated impacts place significant pressure on the ears, making them particularly vulnerable to injury.

Front-row forwards are most at risk because of the intense physical demands of scrummaging, although players in every position can develop cauliflower ear over time.

Can cauliflower ear be prevented?

Early treatment is key. Draining the trapped blood soon after injury can help prevent permanent damage. Scrum caps may also reduce the risk, although they cannot eliminate it entirely.
