Jevon Carter To Re-Sign With Magic

Free agent guard Jevon Carter will re-sign with the Magic on a one-year, veteran’s minimum deal, sources tell ESPN’s Shams Charania (Twitter link).

The eight-year veteran took advantage of an opportunity in Orlando after Chicago waived him in early February. He earned a rotation role and averaged 7.2 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 30 games (one start) with .402/.336/.556 shooting numbers.

A second-round pick in 2018, Carter has mostly bounced around the league, playing for six teams in his career. He was seeing minimal playing time in Chicago before the move to Orlando revived his career.

Carter will make $3.5MM next season, but his cap hit will only be $2.4MM, according to Keith Smith of Spotrac (Twitter link). Smith projects the Magic to currently be roughly $6.2MM below the second apron by keeping Carter and signing Nikola Vucevic. He suggests they could fit in another player at the taxpayer mid-level exception, but believes they won’t to avoid a second apron hard carp.

Carter will likely continue in the same role as aggressive defender off the bench to back up Jalen Suggs at point guard. Orlando now has 13 players either under contract or with reported deals.
