Pelicans forward Saddiq Bey is entering the final year of his current contract, but he and the team have mutual interest in trying to work out an extension this offseason, league sources tell Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. Bey will become extension-eligible as of July 11.
After missing the entire 2024/25 season due to an ACL tear, Bey was impressive in his first year as a Pelican, starting 64 of 72 games and averaging a career-high 17.7 points in 31.2 minutes per night. He posted a shooting line of .451/.367/.841 and also contributed 5.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists per contest.
Bey will have a team-friendly $6.56MM cap hit in 2026/27, though the Pelicans could offer him up to a projected $93MM over four years on an extension.
Scotto also shares another Pelicans-related update, citing league sources who say that assistant coach Jodie Meeks won’t return to the team next season under new head coach Jamahl Mosley.
Here’s more from around the Western Conference:
- As our list of early salary guarantee dates shows, Bronny James‘ contract called for him to have his 2026/27 salary become guaranteed if he wasn’t waived on or before June 29. There’s no indication that James and the Lakers agreed to push that date back, and Keith Smith of Spotrac confirms (via Twitter) that Bronny’s $2.3MM salary for the coming season, which had been partially guaranteed, is now fully guaranteed. The club holds a $2.49MM option on James for 2027/28.
- Former Houston Cougars guard Emanuel Sharp, drafted by the Kings 45th overall last week, will “definitely” be part of Sacramento’s 15-man roster as a rookie rather than signing a two-way deal, according to Sean Cunningham of KCRA News (Twitter link). Bringing Sharp in on a rookie-minimum contract would help the Kings manage their cap situation, since his cap hit will be about half what a veteran minimum would cost.
- During his post-draft media session last week, Spurs general manager Brian Wright explained why he still has complete faith in point guard De’Aaron Fox and head coach Mitch Johnson, who faced criticism for their respective performances in the NBA Finals, writes Tom Orsborn of The San Antonio Express-News (subscription required). Wright said he thought Johnson and his staff did an “amazing job” and said the team’s confidence level in Fox remains “incredibly high,” per Orsborn. “I think we all have learning moments each and every single day, and I think all of us organizationally can look back at this season and find moments where we can all get better, and that’s a beautiful thing,” Wright said. “If you can have the season that we have, and we all say, ‘Hey, there’s things we can all do better for one another,’ that’s absolutely something to be excited about because we can continue to grow.”
- 2025 second-round pick Alex Toohey, who was waived by the Warriors midway through his rookie year after he suffered a left knee injury, is back with the team as part of its Summer League roster, tweets Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area.
