10:10 pm: The trade is official, the Thunder confirmed in a press release. Oklahoma City used the 41st pick to select Kentucky wing Otega Oweh and received $1.5MM in cash from Miami, per Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel (Twitter link).
7:53 pm: The Thunder have moved back four spots in the draft from No. 37 to No. 41, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, who reports (via Twitter) that Oklahoma City is sending the rights to No. 37 pick Ryan Conwell to the Heat.
Miami is sending cash to complete the deal, per Charania.
The Heat are looking for ways to fill out their bench with rotation players on team-friendly contracts after significantly depleting their depth in the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade. They have at least four roster spots to fill while projecting to be about $18MM below the first tax apron, ESPN’s Bobby Marks notes (Twitter link).
Conwell, who was ranked 35th on Jeremy Woo’s final big board for ESPN, is a solid two-way combo guard who was able to play alongside No. 6 pick Mikel Brown Jr. as well as run the offense when Brown was injured this season in Louisville.
Conwell averaged 18.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 34.5% from three on 9.6 attempts per game and was named to the Second Team All-ACC. Althoughe his efficiency dipped slightly, he has a track record of being a high-level shooter, as he averaged 16.5 PPG on 40.9% from deep in his previous two seasons and is a career 83.6% free throw shooter. Conwell is a tough defender too, using his size well on the perimeter.
For a Heat team that needs to add shooting around its core pair of Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, the 22-year-old guard could be a seamless fit while fitting into their culture of toughness and versatility.
