5. Will Carling
Few captains have had a greater impact on English rugby than Will Carling.
He led England through one of the most successful periods in their history, winning three Grand Slams and helping the side reach the 1991 Rugby World Cup final.
However, much of Carling’s reputation is built on his leadership rather than his individual performances. While undoubtedly an excellent centre, many would argue Jeremy Guscott, Will Greenwood and Phil de Glanville were superior players in the position.
