Statement: Leo Cullen confirms Leinster departure

Leo Cullen will step down as Leinster head coach at the end of the 2026/27 season, bringing one of the most successful coaching reigns in the province’s history to a close.

Leinster confirmed the news on Monday after reports from the Irish Independent, revealing that the former captain will leave after 12 years in charge. The IRFU and Leinster have already begun the search for his successor, with several high-profile names already being linked to the role.

Cullen has overseen a golden era for the province, winning the 2018 Champions Cup and six URC/Pro14 titles, most recently lifting the URC trophy after Leinster’s emphatic 36-7 victory over the Bulls at Croke Park. However, his spell will also be remembered for a string of heartbreaking Champions Cup final defeats.

Who could replace Leo Cullen?

With Cullen’s coaching staff, including senior coach Jacques Nienaber, also out of contract next summer, significant changes could be on the horizon.

Nienaber has been tipped for a return to South Africa with the Springboks, although he is also among the contenders to succeed Cullen. Other names linked with the role include Ronan O’Gara, Joe Schmidt, Simon Easterby, Johnny Sexton, Felipe Contepomi, Noel McNamara and Stuart Lancaster.

Cullen explains decision

Confirming his departure, Cullen believes the timing is right to begin a new chapter.

“By the end of next season, in 2027, I will have been in my current job for 12 years. It’ll also be 32 years since I first represented Leinster as a Schools player! So, I think the timing will be right for me to move on to a new challenge.”

Despite announcing his exit early, the 49-year-old stressed his full focus remains on delivering more silverware.

“I’m committed to Leinster up until the end of next season, and I intend to honour my contract, as I always have done.”

Leinster pay tribute

Chief executive Shane Nolan hailed Cullen’s legacy, praising the standards he has set throughout his tenure.

“Leo has been a great player, coach and leader for Leinster and will always be held in the highest regard.”

Nolan also confirmed the recruitment process for Leinster’s next head coach is already underway as the province prepares for life after one of its most influential figures.
