Former England World Cup-winning coach Sir Clive Woodward has urged Steve Borthwick to make a ruthless call at fly-half ahead of the Nations Championship by handing Fin Smith the No.10 shirt.

Writing during the Six Nations, Woodward argued that England’s attack has become too predictable and overly reliant on kicking.
“It’s a big call on George Ford, but I would also replace him with Fin Smith,” Woodward wrote.
“It’s all very well saying Ford has a great kicking game — and he does. But rugby is about more than just kicking. If England only want to kick and chase then they may as well just play Aussie Rules.”
Criticism Of England’s Tactics
Woodward questioned England’s continued reliance on statistics and territorial kicking, claiming it is holding the team back.
“I have seen so much talk about England kicking to compete and win back possession. Statistics seem to dominate that narrative. But coaching has to be about more than just numbers and there’s no doubt that tactic didn’t work at the weekend.”
Ford has earned more than 100 caps for England and remains one of the game’s most respected playmakers, but Woodward believes a change is needed if England are to develop a more dangerous attacking game.

Fin Smith Backed To Lead
Smith has emerged as one of England’s brightest talents and impressed whenever given opportunities at Test level.
The former England boss believes now is the time to fully back the Northampton Saints fly-half.
“I’d give Fin Smith the keys to No 10 for Ireland and tell him to get England’s attack moving.”
With England preparing for the Nations Championship, the battle for the No.10 jersey looks set to be one of Steve Borthwick’s biggest selection decisions.
