The former Wales defence guru is reportedly set to leave Fabien Galthié’s coaching team despite being under contract until the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

According to French outlet L’Equipe, concerns have been growing within the France set-up for some time, with sources alleging Edwards had lost both his influence and authority behind the scenes.

France coaching shake-up

Edwards has played a major role in France’s rise back to the top of world rugby since joining the national side in 2019. During his time with Les Bleus, France have lifted three Six Nations titles, including their Grand Slam-winning campaign in 2022.

However, L’Equipe claims frustration had been building among some figures within French rugby since 2024, with questions raised over the Englishman’s level of involvement.

One source told the publication: “The last Six Nations Championship was simply confirmation that Edwards was no longer fulfilling his role. It couldn’t continue like that until the 2027 World Cup.”

World Cup plans disrupted

Reports suggest Edwards was absent from coaching meetings held in Narbonne and Montpellier last month, where Galthié allegedly informed staff that the 59-year-old would no longer be part of France’s future plans.
