In a debate guaranteed to get the Tartan Army talking, Scotland rugby legend Jim Telfer has once again questioned whether Flower of Scotland should remain the nation’s anthem.
The timing is particularly interesting, with Scotland’s football team kicking off their World Cup campaign against Haiti at 2am on Saturday morning, when millions of Scots are expected to belt out the famous anthem before another major sporting occasion.

Yet despite its popularity, Telfer believes Scotland should eventually move on from a song so heavily centred around England.
Whether it’s at Murrayfield, Hampden or on the world stage, Flower of Scotland remains one of the most iconic anthems in sport. But the former British & Irish Lions coach argues it may no longer reflect modern Scotland.
Telfer’s full take:
“Flower of Scotland is a great song in a way and it does get the hairs on your neck straightening and standing up. But because it’s against another country, I still don’t think it’s the ideal anthem. People sing that song, sing about the English, and it’s just in the moment.”
“After the anthem has passed, we just get on with the game… I still don’t think it should be the national anthem.”
“We need to stop defining ourselves through England, and it would be a sign of maturity if we got ourselves a decent national anthem.”
The criticism isn’t limited to rugby circles. Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay previously labelled Flower of Scotland “maximum Scottish cringe”, while others have suggested alternatives such as Loch Lomond that focus more on Scotland itself than historic battles.
However, supporters of the anthem remain fiercely loyal. For many Scots, no song captures the emotion, passion and identity of representing the nation quite like Flower of Scotland.
So, whether it’s before Scotland’s World Cup clash with Haiti in the early hours of Saturday morning or ahead of a rugby Test at Murrayfield, the anthem debate continues to rage. Telfer has made his position clear — but for now, Scotland’s supporters look set to keep singing every word.
