According to reports in the 42, the Ireland international has accepted a lucrative two-year contract with the Japan Rugby League One side after becoming frustrated during negotiations over a new deal with Leinster.

The New Zealand-born winger, who turns 34 next month, had hoped to remain in Ireland through to the 2027 Rugby World Cup. However, reports suggest he was offered only a one-year extension on reduced terms, prompting him to explore opportunities abroad.

The move would see Lowe become the latest high-profile international star to join Japan’s rapidly growing professional competition and effectively end his Ireland career, given the IRFU’s long-standing policy of selecting only home-based players.

Sungoliath have moved quickly to secure a marquee replacement for departing Springbok superstar Cheslin Kolbe, who is returning to South Africa to join the Stormers ahead of next season.

Lowe arrives with an outstanding résumé. Since joining Leinster in 2017, he has become one of the most influential backs in European rugby, winning multiple trophies and establishing himself as a key figure in Ireland’s success under Andy Farrell. Lowe hunts down back-to-back URC titles to close out his time in Dublin, as Leinster take on the Bulls at Croke Park next Friday 19th June.

Only weeks ago, he became Leinster’s all-time leading try scorer, crossing for his 70th and 71st tries on his 100th appearance for the province to surpass Shane Horgan’s long-standing record.

Despite battling injuries this season, Lowe has remained a vital performer, helping Leinster reach another United Rugby Championship final.

For Sungoliath, the signing is a major statement. Lowe is expected to join a squad featuring former All Blacks captain Sam Cane and arrives as one of world rugby’s most complete wings, renowned for his powerful carrying, aerial excellence and creative attacking instincts.

Should the deal be finalised, Lowe will leave Ireland as one of the most successful overseas-born players ever to wear the green jersey, with his final act being in Leinster’s upcoming URC Grand Final, meaning that he has ran out at the Aviva Stadium for the last time.
