The stage is set for a blockbuster end to the URC season, with Leinster out to complete a successful title defence, whilst the Bulls look to end a wretched run of three Grand Final defeats. Leo Cullen and Johan Ackermann have each named stacked squads for the show-piece match at the home of GAA, with 11 Springboks on their way to Dublin to clash with a star-studded Leinster team of Ireland internationals.

Whilst there are plenty of individual clashes to witness tomorrow night, we’ve picked out the three key battles to look out for in the 2026 URC Grand Final. With an honourable mention to the full-back contest between Hugo Keenan and Willie le Roux, lets get started with the key contests at Croke Park.

3 KEY BATTLES: LEINSTER vs BULLS – URC GRAND FINAL

FLY HALF: SAM PRENDERGAST vs HANDRE POLLARD

We kick things off with two men that will be out to showcase their educated feet, with a stunning battle at fly half between Sam Prendergast and Handre Pollard. Prendergast has returned back to his game-breaking best throughout the latter stage of the season in Leinster blue, with his unpredictable and instinctual attack leading his province back in the final.

With Jack Crowley sidelined through injury, Prendergast looks to be the man for the Ireland 10 jersey for the upcoming Nations Championships. A strong performance and back-to-back URC titles would only boost his confidence, that took quite the knock throughout a sub-par 2026 Six Nations campaign. Having been scrutinised for some underwhelming defensive work, a solid shift against a Springbok-heavy Bulls side would silence the critics – albeit that is of course a task easier said than done.

Prendergast will come under ample pressure in defense, as the Bulls pride themselves on immense physicality at the gain-line. Handre Pollard would love to unleash his wrecking-ball forward pack down through Prendergasts’ channel, and test the mettle of the 23-year-old. Pollard comes into the match with insider knowledge upon Leinster’s defensive set-up, given his previous Springboks association with Leinster mastermind of defense Jacques Nienaber. Leinster head coach Leo Cullen referenced this in his pre-match press conference, with the likes of Pollard and le Roux at a tactical advantage for the final.

SCRUM HALF: JAMISON GIBSON-PARK vs EMBROSE PAPIER

We stick within the half-back axis for the second key battle, with the next entry coming between the two best scrum halves in the United Rugby Championship. Jamison Gibson-Park of Leinster and Bulls nine Embrose Papier are both in exceptional form as of late, with the duo rivaling the likes of Antoine Dupont and Maxime Lucu for the mantle of being the world’s best scrum half right now.

Starting off with Gibson-Park, the Ireland international has been a pivotal part of Leinster’s ride to their second consecutive URC Grand Final, as he delivered an inspired performance upon his latest hit out in blue. The New Zealand-born Ireland international raced away to bag the decisive try against the Stormers, and was at his unplayable best in the win over the Cape Town side, as well as in the quarter-final victory over the Lions of Johannesburg.

Whilst Gibson-Park is out to make it a third straight week of stunning performances against South African opposition, Embrose Papier is out to prove that he belongs in the green and gold of the Spingboks this Summer. With injury uncertainties around the likes of Cobus Reinach, Jaden Hendrikse and Morne van den Berg, Papier’s purple patch of form has also landed at an opportune time for the Bulls man.

His spot at scrum half in the URC’s Team of the Season speaks volumes, as the halfback has collected nine Player of the Match performances for Johan Ackermann’s side this season. A long awaited URC title would be the icing on the cake for Papier and the Bulls and would bring an end to their Grand Final curse.

LOOSE-HEAD PROP: JERRY CAHIR vs GERARD STEENEKAMP

We head across to the forward pack for the third and final key battle, with a thunderous contest expected at the scrum between Leinster and the Bulls. It is no secret that the Pretoria side pride themselves on having one of the most immovable eight-man packs from anywhere in club rugby, with the likes of loose-head prop Gerard Steenekamp paramount to the scrummaging foundation.

Following a long road to recovery from a problematic knee injury, Steenekamp established himself within South Africa’s premier props for the 2025 Autumn Nations Series, and has not taken a backwards step since. Jostling against the likes of Boan Venter and Ox Nche for the one jersey, Steenekamp would love nothing more than to end his club season with the URC crown, before pushing on to hammer down his claim to the starting Springboks pack this Summer.

Standing across from the Bulls man, is Leinster’s starting loose-head Jerry Cahir. With the injury concerns continuing for Ireland international Andrew Porter, the established Ireland international will sit out the final with a calf issue, with Cahir stepping up to the opportunity at hand. The 25-year-old has emerged for a stunning break-out season at Leinster, having progressed up the ranks of Lansdowne RFC. This will be Cahir’s seventh Leinster start in total, with plenty of pressure upon the young prop’s shoulders.
