The Pistons have agreed to bring back free agent wing Kevin Huerter on a new three-year, $27MM contract, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania (Twitter link). The third year of the deal will be a team option, reports Omari Sankofa II of The Detroit Free Press (Twitter link).
Acquired at February’s trade deadline by Detroit from Chicago, Huerter would have reached the open market on Tuesday if he hadn’t agreed to terms with the Pistons before then.
The 27-year-old is known as a strong three-point shooter but has struggled with his outside shot over the past couple seasons after converting 38.2% of his attempts from beyond the arc during his first six years in the NBA. Since the start of the 2024/25 season, Huerter has made just 32.4% of his tries for the Kings, Bulls, and Pistons. As Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports observes (via Twitter), that dip in efficiency coincides with Huerter’s return from a torn labrum.
The terms of Huerter’s new deal suggest that the Pistons believe in Huerter’s ability to regain his prior form. Having agreed to acquire Isaiah Joe in a trade with Oklahoma City last week, the club has now secured another shooter to complement Cade Cunningham.
It’s unclear what the deals for Joe and Huerter mean for Duncan Robinson‘s future in Detroit. Robinson is coming off a solid season and his $16MM cap hit, which is partially guaranteed for $2MM, isn’t unreasonable for a player who converted 41.0% of 7.0 three-point attempts per game. The Pistons ranked 28th in three-pointers per game in 2025/26, so they may simply be looking to add more shooting to help out Robinson rather than replacing him.
In 69 total outings for Chicago and Detroit last season, Huerter averaged 10.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 22.4 minutes per game.
