Matt Dawson takes aim at current England scrum-half

World Cup-winning former England scrum-half Matt Dawson has questioned why current England number nine Ben Spencer has been unable to reproduce his impressive club performances on the international stage.

Dawson, who famously provided the pass for Jonny Wilkinson’s match-winning drop goal in the 2003 Rugby World Cup final, remains one of England’s most distinguished scrum-halves.

The 53-year-old was speaking on The Good, The Bad, & The Rugby podcast alongside former England fly-half Paul Grayson, where England’s upcoming Nations Championship campaign was among the topics discussed.

A key talking point was Spencer, whose form for Bath has regularly contrasted with his performances in an England shirt.

“There is something holding him back when he’s in that England jersey, and whether it’s historical, whether his relationship with somebody,” Dawson said.

“I’ve got no idea, but he is not the same player as I see in a Bath jersey. I would love him to be, because I think he’s very different to those two Northampton scrum-halves.”

Now aged 33, Spencer has earned just 16 England caps. He made his debut against South Africa in 2018 but had to wait until 2024 to make his first Test start.

Much of his international career was spent behind experienced half-backs Ben Youngs and Danny Care. More recently, he has remained in contention largely due to the limited depth of specialist scrum-halves behind Alex Mitchell.

However, with promising young talents such as Lucas Friday, Archie McParland and Jack Bracken emerging, competition for places is only increasing.

Despite spending long periods outside the national setup, Spencer has enjoyed considerable success at club level. He won four Premiership titles and two Champions Cups with Saracens before helping Bath secure the Prem crown last season.

Yet those achievements have not translated into consistent impact for England, something Dawson believes remains difficult to explain.

“He’s in charge of a proper load of artillery at Bath and manages it really well,” Dawson said.

“It was a big step up into the international game, and it’s not all about hitting cheat lines and scoring great tries, and hopefully there will be lots of that, but there’s a vast majority of the game where you’ve got to be really pragmatic, and it’s fast and furious in the mind, and the decisions have to be absolutely spot on.”

Dawson suggested Spencer may be overthinking his role at Test level, rather than playing with the same freedom and authority he displays for Bath.

“I do see Ben doing that week in, week out with Bath, but when he’s at England, it’s as if he’s trying to pretend to be a player for England rather than just be Ben Spencer.”
