On 5 June 2015, the rugby world lost one of its most loved and respected figures when Jerry Collins tragically died in a car accident in France aged just 34.

Known for his bone-crunching tackles and fearless playing style, Collins was also remembered as one of rugby’s kindest and most generous characters. Eleven years on, here are 10 fascinating facts about the All Blacks icon.

1. He won 48 Test caps for New Zealand

Collins became one of the most feared back-row forwards in world rugby, earning 48 caps for New Zealand national rugby union team between 2001 and 2007. 

2. He was regarded as one of rugby’s hardest tacklers

Opponents dreaded running into him. His physicality became legendary and helped make him a fan favourite across the rugby world. 

3. He once turned out for Barnstaple RFC

One of rugby’s great cult stories came in 2013 when Collins unexpectedly played for North Devon club Barnstaple while staying in the area. The sight of a former All Black superstar playing grassroots rugby instantly became folklore. 

4. He bought a pub a brand-new television

Perhaps the best story about Collins’ generosity came during his time in the UK. After walking into a pub and finding the television too small to watch rugby comfortably, he reportedly drove to Tesco, bought a large-screen TV and gifted it to the pub before leaving. 

5. He never forgot his roots

Born in Apia, Collins grew up in Porirua, New Zealand, and remained deeply connected to his Samoan heritage throughout his life. 

6. He was related to another All Blacks great

Collins was a cousin of former All Blacks captain Tana Umaga, another iconic figure in New Zealand rugby. 

7. He played rugby all over the world

After leaving New Zealand, Collins enjoyed spells with RC Toulon, Ospreys, Yamaha Júbilo in Japan and Narbonne in France. 

8. His final act was trying to protect his baby daughter

Following the tragic crash that claimed the lives of Collins and partner Alana Madill, reports revealed he attempted to shield baby daughter Ayla with his own body. Ayla survived despite suffering serious injuries. It remains one of the most heartbreaking and courageous stories in rugby history. 

9. His eldest daughter now represents England

Collins’ legacy lives on through his eldest daughter, Honey Kerslake, who has progressed through England’s pathway and earned selection for England’s women’s Under-21 squad. 

10. His impact went far beyond rugby

The stories told about Collins are rarely just about tackles or trophies. Teammates, opponents and supporters consistently remember him for his humility, generosity and willingness to help others. Eleven years after his passing, those qualities remain as much a part of his legacy as anything he achieved on the field
