The former Wales wing and centre announced his retirement from professional rugby in April but will pull on his boots one final time against the country he represented with distinction, winning 121 caps and scoring 47 tries.

North is the latest player to join the Barbarians squad and will link up with the side following this weekend’s fixture against South Africa in Port Elizabeth.

The match will mark the first time the Welsh great has represented the Barbarians and provides a fitting finale to a remarkable career spanning 16 years.

North said: “It’s always been a dream of mine to play for the Barbarians so to be invited now, for a game at Twickenham, against Wales is just incredible.

“I have been so privileged to enjoy the career that I have had, and I have so many unforgettable memories from Wales and friendships to last a lifetime. So to go out against my country, with some of my friends and teammates playing is so special.

“To also be able to play alongside some of the best and most exciting players in the world, and to enjoy that famous Barbarians spirit is something I couldn’t turn down.

“I can’t wait to link up with the boys next week and hopefully we can do something special.”

Since making his Wales debut in 2010, North has played a key role in four Six Nations title-winning campaigns, including Grand Slam triumphs in 2012 and 2019. He also toured twice with the British & Irish Lions.

At club level, North enjoyed spells with Scarlets, Northampton Saints and Ospreys before spending the past two seasons with French side Provence. There he played alongside fellow Barbarians squad member Izack Rodda.

Widely regarded as one of Wales’ finest backs of the professional era, North now has the opportunity to sign off in style in one of rugby’s most iconic jerseys.
