Edwards, widely regarded as one of the best defence coaches in world rugby, has been a key figure in France’s rise since joining the set-up in 2020. Under his guidance, Les Bleus won three Six Nations championships and established themselves as one of the leading teams in the game.
However, Galthié has now confirmed that the decision to remove Edwards from his coaching team was his own.
“I made the decision to modify the organisation that has been in place for six or seven years now,” Galthié said.
“(Edwards) brought us his knowledge of the highest level, he brought us his expertise, he brought us his motivation, he brought us his loyalty and his commitment.”
French reports claim Galthié became concerned by the number of points and tries France conceded during this year’s Six Nations campaign. While France lifted the trophy, they leaked 50 points against Scotland and 46 against England, leading to questions over the effectiveness of their defensive system.
