Slattery was a key figure in Irish rugby throughout the 1970s and 1980s and also earned selection for the British & Irish Lions on their famous tours of New Zealand in 1971 and South Africa in 1974.

His former club Blackrock College RFC confirmed the news in an emotional statement.

“There are players who wear a jersey and there are players who define it. Fergus defined ours,” the club said.

“To those who watched him play, he represented rugby at its purest. An open-side flanker of extraordinary intelligence, courage and relentless competitiveness, he always seemed to arrive first where the contest was fiercest.”

Blackrock described Slattery as a player who combined “ferocity and grace” and said his impact extended far beyond his achievements on the field.

“Modest in demeanour, yet monumental in achievement, Fergus never sought admiration, but earned it universally from team-mates, opponents, supporters and generations of young rugby players.”

Tributes have already begun to pour in, with the IRFU expressing its sadness at the passing of a true Irish rugby icon.

“Everyone at Irish Rugby is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Ireland captain Fergus Slattery,” a statement read.

“Our thoughts are with Fergus’ family, friends and former team-mates at this sad time.”

During his distinguished international career, Slattery became one of the most influential forwards in world rugby. His performances for Ireland and the Lions earned widespread acclaim, with many ranking him among the greatest openside flankers of the amateur era.

A Lions tourist, Ireland captain and one of the most respected back-row forwards of his generation, Slattery leaves behind a legacy that will never be forgotten.
