The Highlanders have secured the return of former international Jermaine Ainsley, with the experienced prop signing a two-year deal that will see him rejoin the club for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season and remain through to the end of 2028.

Ainsley previously made 38 appearances for the Highlanders between 2022 and 2024 after earlier spells with the Western Force and Melbourne Rebels.
The 30-year-old established himself as a powerful and technically accomplished tighthead prop, earning a reputation for his work rate, scrummaging strength and influence around the field.
Since departing New Zealand, Ainsley has continued to enhance his credentials in France’s TOP 14 competition, making 30 appearances for Lyon between 2024 and 2026 while gaining further experience at the highest levels of club rugby.
A move to Saracens had been agreed earlier this year, but the deal was ultimately cancelled after Ainsley left Lyon ahead of schedule due to a serious back injury.
Lyon had already confirmed his departure on social media, stating: “In order to fulfil his desire to return home to New Zealand, Jermaine Ainsley has been released from his contract with immediate effect.”

The former Australia international, who has also represented the All Blacks XV, returned home while managing a significant back injury. He joined Lyon from the Highlanders in 2024 and has not featured since the club’s Top 14 clash with Toulon at the end of February.
Saracens announced Ainsley’s signing in February before later confirming the move would not proceed.
Highlanders Head Coach Jamie Joseph said Ainsley’s return comes at an important time as the club continues building towards the future.
“Having Jermaine back is a major boost. He’s a competitor, he’s durable, and he’s played a lot of high-level rugby. He’ll add leadership to our pack and help drive the standards we’re setting for 2027 and beyond.”
Ainsley said he and his family were excited by the opportunity to return to Dunedin.
“My family and I are excited to be joining the Highlanders. I didn’t think I’d ever get the opportunity to play in New Zealand again, let alone for the Highlanders, so I’m really looking forward to this next chapter.
“I can’t wait to rip in with the team next season. It looks like a pretty strong squad that’s been growing over the last few seasons.”
